NOAH SLID ONTO a stool in the bar and ordered a kahlua and cream. He’d tried going to bed at eleven after the dinner, but he couldn’t sleep. Since the bars were open until two, he’d come down here now—at one—hoping some liquor might relax him. The gruff banter from a table of men in the corner couldn’t stop his thoughts.
Couldn’t stop him from thinking about Eve. First the sexuality workshop had his mind stuck in a rut of sexual speculation about her and what she’d be like in bed. Then, she’d worn a dress to dinner that made his mouth water and restarted a hard-on that had finally subsided. As he sipped the sweet drink, he pictured her in the strapless tangerine-colored outfit that kissed her creamy skin and flirted with her knees, and the high strappy sandals that made her legs prettier than a runway model’s.
Fuck.
“Noah?”
Double fuck.
He turned. Well, at least she’d changed. She wore black leggings and an oversize print top. She looked cute now, her hair pulled back in clips from her temples. “What are you doing down here?” she asked.
“I couldn’t sleep.” He watched her. “You?”
“I went to a suite party with some of the women. It started to get wild—they’re all pretty young—so I left. But I was too wound up to sleep.”
“You want a drink?”
Her hesitation was slight. “All right.” She dropped down on the stool next to him and crossed her legs. “So what did you think of the seminar?”
“You did a great job. The program was varied and interesting. The women seemed fascinated by the workshops.”
“Especially yours.” She ordered a scotch when the bartender came over.
“Mine went okay.”
“Are you kidding? The women upstairs couldn’t stop talking about it. Or you,” she teased.
“I’m sure you’re exaggerating.”
“Not in the least.” Her drink was delivered, and she sipped it. “Just now, especially when they’d had some booze in them, you were the main topic of conversation.”
“Hrrmph. Since I’m old enough to be any one of their fathers, they’re probably surprised that I could have such progressive attitudes.”
She studied the white shirt he’d left on with his dress pants; he’d discarded the jacket and tie. “That wasn’t how they were talking about you, Chief.” She hid a grin with her glass. “I think the word yummy came up several times.”
Because he wanted to ask her if she had participated in the discussion about him, what she’d contributed, if she agreed with them, he rolled his eyes. “Let’s change the subject.”
“Okay,” she laughed. “Which workshops did you go to?”
“Yours.”
“Pretty boring, huh?”
“I liked hearing about your rise in the department. So did everybody else.”
“I guess.”
“You didn’t have it easy, did you?”
“Uh-uh. No women did fifteen years ago.”
“I’m sorry about your husband, Eve. He had to be a schmuck.”
She cocked her head. “I didn’t talk about Mike at my workshop.”
He felt himself flush. “Oh, um...” He shrugged. “I sat in on the sexuality panel.”
“You did?” Now her face colored. “I didn’t see you.”
“Or you might not have been as open.
